Chapter 3
Seth Blake found himself well behind the woman as she charged across the airfield. He cursed his inability to fly as the woman reached a tarp-covered biplane. "That ain't going to do us a lick of good, lady. I can't fly." She pulled the tarp free of the plane, than leaned in to the pilot's seat. She tossed Seth a pair of goggles. "Get in the gunner's seat." Blake was momentarily taken aback, but now wasn't the time. The Nazis had emerged from the burning bar, Luther in the lead. Blake climbed in to the gunner's cockpit. The woman was already gunning the engines. The plane was already moving as Blake strapped himself in to the seat. "In case you haven't figured it out yet, smart guy, I'm your contact." "What the hell you doing working for the Chamber?" "My dad was a pilot for the Chamber for years. I took up the family business after he died. My name's Samantha Jones. You can call me Sam." Sam pulled the plane down the runway as the Nazis tried to open fire. She already had the plane moving before they ever had a chance to hit. The biplane zoomed down the runway and in to the air. "Great," Seth said. "Let's get to treasure hunting then." "I think we have other problems first." Sam pointed down to the biplane idling its way across the field. "Look's like your Nazi friends were prepared for an aerial escape." The Nazi flyer shot up and in to the air on their tail. Sam tried to gun the engines in an attempt to escape, but the enemy flyer was too quick. He was right on her. She tried to weave to the left than the right, hoping she'd be able to shake the other plane off, but it was to no avail. She was dealing with an experienced pilot here. "This guy's good," she yelled over the engine's roar. "I've never going to be able to lose him, so get ready to use that chain gun of yours." Blake took a second to check over the gun. Everything checked out just fine. He gave the thumbs up sign to his pilot. Sam smiled. "Get ready for some fun, then!" Sam yanked back hard on the control stick. Their biplane banked up hard in to the air. Blake felt his stomach twist as the plane pulled in to a hard loop. Looking up, or down really Blake realized, he saw the Nazi flyer below. Swallowing back the urge to vomit, he clutched the trigger of the gun. Sam brought the biplane down right behind the enemy flyer. Blake unloaded the cannon on their foe. He grinned as he watched the bullets rip apart the other plane's tail. Black smoke poared from the plane as its engines gave out. Blake kept the firepower going as the plane plummeted to the earth below. "You're better than I thought," Sam yelled forward. Blake grinned back at her. "Thanks, I think. Where to next?" "My sources tell me that the Midas Hand is most likely located in Ethiopia. I have a contact waiting at a little known runway. It's in the middle of the jungle, so I doubt the Nazis have a clue about it. Hopefully, we're be able to get in, find it, and get out without much trouble." "You don't do this very often, do you?" Sam seemed a little perturbed at his comment. "If you must know, this is my first assignment for the Chamber. But you won't find anyone who knows the air over Africa better than me." "Expect trouble," Blake said. "There's always trouble. Hell, I wouldn't have it any other way." |
